FAQS

WHAT IS GENDER AFFIRMING VOICE TRAINING?

Gender affirming voice training is the process of changing the way you sound and speak so that it more closely matches your gender expression. It can be a standalone process or as part of a vocal surgery protocol.

In therapy, we target the following areas:

  • pitch

  • resonance

  • intonation

  • rate, volume and articulation

  • non-speech (i.e. cough and sneeze)

  • nonverbal language.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

Gender affirming voice work is a process that requires a client's commitment to regular practice and self-monitoring. The goal of the clinician is to

  • help clients become independent and proficient at caring for the voice

  • decrease be reliance on the clinician for maintaining the outcome.

  • remain a source of support for follow up and maintenance as needed

The number of sessions depends on the client's individual profile and needs. There is no one size fits all, however, 6-10 sessions is not unusual for clients seeking this type of training.
